regionalism

regionalism
Regions are geographical areas within a country and regionalism involves providing them with some form of special representation in order that the views of their inhabitants can be articulated. Gestures towards regional government have been made over several decades, but as yet in Britain there have been no elected regional councils. The voters of the North East overwhelmingly turned down the opportunity to have such a body in a referendum in September 2004. Of course, the peoples of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have received recognition via the devolved machinery established in recent years.
